Muskingum County Fair 2023
My parents were both born in Ohio and when they retired they moved from California back to their roots. A few years later I moved out to be with my Dad after my Mom passed. The people here are amazing. They’re amazing in California also but it’s different here. I’ve really taken to it. Every year the fair comes to town and people either love it or hate it. I think if you’ve grown up here it can sometimes get old. But for me - I really love it. A slice of America for sure. Bull riding, candied apples, kids entering their favorite animals in competition, smash up derby and tractor pulls. For one week out the year in SE Ohio, Muskingum County welcomes the fair and all seem to gather here to celebrate. Here are some of my favorite images from this past summer.
I walked to the other side of the fairgrounds, interested in the lively atmosphere known for its exciting horse competitions. There you could see different competitions for horse breeds and watch horses and riders compete in thrilling barrel runs, which was fun for both kids and adults.
A chance meeting with Ms Muskingum County Fair on the way back to the main area.
And onto the main event - the smash up derby. The crowd showed up in full for this and lots of cheering as their favorite driver took a win. And a friend’s daughter caught up in the fun and some cotton candy.
And as the sun sets and the lights of the rides turn on, you can hear the crowd cheering on their favorite drivers, laughter of children from the rides and announcements over the PA of upcoming events. All of this with crickets chiming in and a warm, humid Ohio evening. I love the fair.
